Step 1: Identify the type of fiber needed for your application.
The first step in selecting the right fiber is to understand the type of fiber needed for your application. The primary standards for fiber-reinforced concrete are ASTM C1116 and EN14889. The Standard Specification for Fiber-Reinforced Concrete outlines four classifications for fiber-reinforced concrete:

Type I - Steel fiber reinforced concrete or shotcrete (ASTM A820)

PIONEER® concrete fibers, which comply with ASTM C1116 and EN 14889 standards, are categorized into the following three types:
Step 2: Determine the fiber performance required for your application.
The performance of concrete fibers is determined by the properties of the fibers and their resistance to cracking in concrete.
Physical properties are influenced by tensile strength, aspect ratio (length/diameter), and anchorage (e.g., hooks, pleats, embossing). These factors must work together for optimal performance. Higher tensile strength and modulus of elasticity generally indicate better performance, and dispersibility is also key.
Fiber-reinforced concrete is a composite material, so fibers are tested in concrete to verify their effectiveness. Fibers bridge cracks to provide post-crack strength, acting like traditional reinforcement when cracks occur, allowing load transfer.
